We start our trip with one of the most important archaeological site, town from late Roman Empire, where Roman Emperors were born - Sirmium.
In the 3rd century it was proclaimed the capital city of Lower Pannonia. Later it became an important Christian Centre and the Seat of Episcopate of Sirmium. The city had an emperor’s palace, horse racing arena, mint and theatre, as well as public baths, temples, luxury villas and public palaces. The only known not excavated Roman Hippodrome in the world is in Sirmium. A colossal building lies directly under the town centre of the modern Sremska Mitrovica, which is only about 2-4m above the ground line of former Sirmium. The Republic of Serbia declared this site an Archaeological Site of Exceptional Importance in 1990.
After Sirmium optional lunch break in one of the traditional house hold restaurants Salas, that offers forgotten and specific food originating from this region of Serbia, Srem.
Next stop will be Fruska Gora - national park in Serbia, whose rocks reach, by origin, in the distant history of the planet. Fruska Gora is a lonely mountain in the Panonian planes, just like it was once probably an island in the sea of the same name. With the altitude of 539 meters, it is the dominating elevation in Vojvodina, surrounded on the south and north by rivers. Because of the impressive complex of medieval Serb monasteries, excitinghistory, extraordinary beauty and price less spiritual heritage, Fruska Gora is also called the Serbian Holy Mount, after Hilandar is located. There are 17 Orthodox monasteries scattered over the outskirts of the national park, built in late 15th and 16th century. Most of them were later renovated in the 18th century and represent today the museums of invaluable spiritual and artistic heritage. They are the guardians of Serbian religion, tradition and customs, as well as the monuments to the creativity of the medieval Serbia in architecture and paining. Best known ones are Grgeteg, Hopovo, Jazak, Velika Remeta, Krusedol.
On this tour we will visit two of them: Krusedol - a XVI century monastery whichis considered for most beautiful monastery of Fruska Gora, and certainly with most important role of its time. It was a seat of diocese of Srem, which was later transferred to Sremski Karlovci. Relics of members of holly family Brankovic are placed inside of the church and many important people are buried there as well, such as two Serbian patriarchs and King Milan Obrenovic.
Return back to Belgrade.
